The Harker Heights football team finished up its 2010 Spring practice with its annual Spring Game on Thursday night at Harker Heights High School with an eye toward the future.

Although the purpose of the game was to give next year's players a sense of game-type situations, coach Mike Mullins said before the game, his main goal was to come away with a healthy team.

"At this point, we've done a lot of scrimmaging, a lot of 7-on-7 so this is a matter of getting after each other a little bit and coming out of it healthy," Mullins said.

Minus the kicking game and keeping score, the Knights were focused on getting first downs.

"We'll have a game-like situation with the down makers and trying to get first downs," Mullins said. "Of course they will try to stop us, but there won't be a lot of score keeping involved. We want everybody to win."

Although Harker Heights is breaking in new players across the board, Mullins said he was looking to continue to maintain the strides his team has made during spring practice and to find a back up for runningback DeAndre Jones.

"We've been working the quarterbacks and they've all been performing well, so we want to continue that success," Mullin said. "W'e know we have an outstanding tailback in DeAndre Jones, but his time will probably be limited and we are going to try and find a back up for him."

Despite the Spring Game signaling the end of Spring Practice, the Knights will be busy in the offseason.

On Saturday Haker Heights will participate in a 7-on- 7 tournament at Round Rock Westwood and another on June 18 at Round Rock Stony Point. After the tournaments the Knights will begin their 6-week strength camp.

The Knights will open the 2010 season with their first practice on Aug. 9.

Mullins said he is please with the progress his team has made during the spring.

"We've had good competition and some good things over the course of spring practice," Mullins said. "We couldn't be more pleased."
