Land is purchased for new schools in Heights

With all the new subdivisions under construction, Harker Heights will need a new school to keep up with the population. Not only are they getting a new middle school, they are also getting a new elementary school!

Assistant superintendent of Business Belinda Puskta said that the Killeen Independent School District has already purchased the land for both schools. The middle school will be located in Stagecoach Valley, while the elementary school will be located much closer to Harker Heights High School.

The land for the school is part of the “Bond Package,” 30 acres are designated for the middle school and 20 acres for the elementary school.

“We will be starting construction this fall,” Pustka said, “if everything goes as planned.”

Ribbon axing officially opens Harker Heights Fire Station No. 2

A different type of ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the new Harker Heights Fire Station No. 2 on Thursday, May 18. Following fire-fighting tradition, Captain Steve Philen used an axe to cut a fire hose into two pieces. Philen was the Project Supervisor during construction of the new fire station.

According ot Emergency Services Director Leon Charpentier, the city of Harker Heights saved $150,000 by using fire department employees to build 90 percent of the facility. Charpentier told the crowd on hand for the hose-cutting ceremony, getting the new fire station built is “one of the top ten exciting things I’ve done in my life.” The station will now be operated 24 hours a day, seven days a day. It is located at the corner of Cedar Knob and Stillhouse Lake Roads.
