The Copperas Cove Leader-Press took top honors in its division at the 2010 Texas Gulf Coast Press Association convention last week in Port Aransas.

The Leader-Press – a sister paper to the Harker Heights Evening Star and Belton Journal – won the Division 3 Sweepstakes award, which is the result of all awards converted to points.

The Leader-Press placed first in General Excellence, Special Section (for “The Hills” visitors guide) and Display Advertising.

Second-place awards were for Sports Coverage, Serious Column and News Photo.

Third-place awards were for Sports Photos and Feature Writing.

The judge in the General Excellence category called the Leader-Press a “good newspaper with excellent design. Easy to read and easy to find what you’re looking for.”

“Beautiful publication,” the judge said of “The Hills” visitors guide. “Good job!”

On sports: “Great stories! Your photos are sharp and clean. You are covering your community well.”

John Eubanks, editor of the Evening Star, was sports editor of the Leader-Press during last year’s judging period (and still oversees sports coverage for the paper).

He also wrote the columns that placed second in the aforementioned Serious Columns category. One of those columns, about Memorial Day, is re-printed on Page 5 of this week’s Evening Star.

Leader-Press ad designer Travis Martin, who won first place for Display Advertising, is also the Evening Star’s primary ad designer.

Leader-Press publisher Larry Hauk is also publisher of the Evening Star. Joyce Hauk is associate editor of the Leader-Press.
