More than 300 attend annual HHHS Spring Sports Banquet

The Harker Heights Knights are scheduled to wrap up spring football drills on Friday. The season opener is Aug. 28 in the Alamodome in San Antonio against Georgetown.Harker Heights High School honored its spring student athletes during the annual Spring Sports Banquet Monday night in the school cafeteria.

Athletic Director and football coach Mike Mullins said more than 300 people were in attendance for the ceremony.

"We had a huge crowd and great participation from our spring sports teams," Mullins said. "We also had a really good showing of parents."

Along with honoring all the spring athletes for their outstanding seasons, the Athletic Department also honored four athletes with scholarships.

Swimmer Brandon Salter, and Soccer and Lacrosse player David Tarsa each received the Knights Booster Club scholarship.

Swimmers Michelle Masullo and Alex Ott and also received the Booster Club scholarship.

Each scholarship was worth $2,000.

"It's a little bit of a detailed process to go through, but once you get it, it's definitely worth it," Mullins said of the scholarship recipients.

The Amanda Ware Memorial Scholarship was also awared to the cross-country team's Mellisa Edens.

Knights finishing up Spring practice

With the year coming to a close, the Knights football team will finish up their spring practice on Friday.

"They've really learned a bunch and we've had great improvement in the retention," Mullins said. "I couldn't ask for a better bunch of guys to work with."

After three weeks of practice in the Texas heat, Mullins said his team is coming along.

"I think our defensive line has really improved, our offensive line is really coming together and our three quarterbacks have been working hard," Mullins said. "From that standpoint, it's really all I can ask for."

The Knights will open their 2010 season in the 12th Annual Dave Campbell's Texas Football Classic in San Antonio on Aug. 28 against Georgetown.

Along with the offense and defense making improvements, Mullins said his team is looking more complete as the spring has gone on.

"We've worked hard on our kicking game this spring and that has really come along," Mullins said. "We feel like we are much farther ahead."
