Melissa Mays saved her best for last this season as she set two personal bests en route to winning a silver medal at the UIL State Track and Field Championships last weekend. Mays, a junior, cracked the 40-foot barrier in the triple jump on her third attempt, which went for 40’1.5”.

On her final attempt, she bettered that jump by leaping 40’3” to reset her personal best and finish in second place.

The gold medal went to senior Dallas Rose of Pearland, who won with a best jump of 42’.5”

The news was not quite so joyous for Heights’ other state entry. Aliese Hyde, the defending bronze-medalist in the 800 meter run, fell short of her goal to repeat as a state medalist.

Hyde, a junior who has become one of the top half-milers in the country, was disqualified for stepping out of her lane. Her finishing time would be been good enough for third were it not for the DQ.
